[The first sound that can be heard is a loud thump as the journal hits the floor and pops open to record everything that follows.]

[Emil isn't even aware that his journal is open and picking up all of this.]

No, no no please no please... no... no!!

[His voice escalates in pitch, ending in a strangled, heart-wrenching cross between a scream and a sob.]

[It's unlocked, no worries! Come right on in, he's upstairs in the bedroom just sort of curled into a little ball.]

[Well, he'll still knock on the bedroom door before coming in. It's only the polite thing to do.]

Emil?

[He doesn't seem to even have heard Vyse just yet.]

[He'll slowly enter the room and sit down on the bed next to Emil, then.]

F-first Marta and now Richter... why...?

... Because they can't stay here forever. One of you two had to go home first, it just happened to be Richter.

[He's silent for a moment. If any of them deserved to be stuck here for a long time, it's him, but...]

[The silence is fine with Vyse. He knows Emil is listening.]

We're all going to have to go home eventually. I know it's tough for some of us. It'll be tough for me, too. I've made loads of friends here and I'd hate to lose them all. But that's why we're fighting, right? To change all of that.

... how long have you been here, Vyse?

Hmm... I can't remember the exact month, because Albert hadn't created a calendar yet back then, but if I'd have to guess I'd say more than a year and a half.

[A year and a half, Luke's been here almost two years and he's been here over a year himself... how long will it be before he gets to go back?]

O-oh. That's... a long time.

It is. I've been through a lot in that time, but I don't think I have any regrets. All those experiences helped me to grow stronger as a person. Wouldn't you say you've grown too, Emil?

[Has he? He's not so sure. He doesn't really feel like he's grown right now; he feels like the sad, scared kid he was back in Luin.]

I probably don't have too much room to talk because I don't know you that well, but I think you've grown a little. There's room for improvement, sure, but that's all the more reason to keep working on it.

[But is there even a point when every aspect of their lives is controlled by some outside force? Emil isn't sure about that.]

... I want to go home too.

I have a lot of friends back home I miss. I know I can't wish for them to be brought to Luceti, because that'd just be selfish of me. On the other hand, I... don't really want to go home either. I have lots of other friends here and I can't leave them until I've found a way to make sure we can stay in touch when I do go home.

[He leans back and closes his eyes for a moment.]

So I guess the trick is to set a goal for yourself and then telling yourself you need to reach it before you leave. Then, you won't be so homesick and you'll have something to keep yourself busy.

[He thinks about this for a moment.]

What are your goals, Vyse?

Huh... Well, like I said, I want to find a way to stay in touch with all my friends from Luceti. And I want to make sure nobody in this world has to live under the Malnosso's rule anymore. I want to make sure everyone's safe from the Third Party and whatever else is out there. Maybe even find an air ship and explore all of Luceti, before going home.

[Those are all impressive goals indeed. Things that Emil... doesn't think he could ever do.]

I want to find a way to stay in touch with everyone too. Cloud and I even talked about it a few times.

Well, then. Do you really want to go home before succeeding in that?

I... no.

As long as you have something to strive for and lots of other friends to watch over you, this place isn't so bad at all.

Y-yeah.

[He swallows hard and tries to fake a smile.]
