[Once again Emil is out wandering around the village, although this time he's got his chimera Sial at his heels. Sial is carrying a small stick in his mouth, and every so often he'll run over to Emil and nudge at the boy's leg until Emil reaches down to take the stick and toss it halfheartedly for Sial to fetch. There's clearly something on his mind at the moment if his downcast expression is any indication.

If you happen to pass the pair, Sial might come bother you to see if you'll throw the stick for him.]

[ Ohgod you're so adorable! Viola kneels down and takes the stick. ] You like to fetch, little guy? All right, then. [ She hurls the stick to the left. She still has no idea what it is. ]

[And Sial charges off after the stick! Well, as fast as those little legs can carry him, that is.

His owner will be coming over a moment later to see just who his pet is mooching from now.]

He's really making a lot of new friends today.

He's a chimera... it's a type of monster. But um, he won't hurt you or anything, so you don't have to worry about that.

He'll look a lot scarier once he's evolved, but I can't do that here in Luceti. I guess that's why the Malnosso even let me have him in the first place.

Evolve? You mean, when he grows up? Can the Malnosso really keep him from growing?

It's not exactly growing... more like feeding them something special once they get strong enough so they'll change into their next form.

That's interesting! None the animals I know of back home can do that.

I think it's unique to the monsters from my world-- no one else I've talked to has monsters like that either.

Maybe people just haven't studied the monsters much where they come from. I know I sure haven't!

But wouldn't people notice if the monsters suddenly changed like that?

I don't think anybody stands around monsters long enough to find out. Most people either run up to attack or run away.

How'd you ever end up with a chimera, then? Didn't you say they're considered monsters where you're from?

I make pacts with monsters to help increase the powers of the Centurions so that Ratatosk can fully awaken. Um... it's kind of complicated.

A little, yeah. [ Grins. ] So, how does it work? [ This sounds fascinating! ]

Well, the Centurions work under Ratatosk to help control the flow of mana in the world, but Ratatosk and most of the Centurions are asleep right now. So if I make pacts with monsters of different elements, that helps make the Centurions stronger, and once they've regained their power, Ratatosk will be fully awakened as well. Does that make any sense?

[ She nods. ] Basically, yeah. Is there something wrong with the, uh, 'mana' in your world?

It's all out of balance now because Ratatosk and the Centurions have been asleep. Our world will be in big trouble if something isn't done to fix it, which is why I've been traveling around awakening the Centurions.
