[The journal picks up a bit of coughing as Emil's hand bumps it and knocks it open in his frantic search, followed by some mumbling.]

... w-wait, I think I found it.

[He coughs again, then clears his throat.]

Can anyone hear me? Fina and I... we were in my house, and... I-I think it collapsed. Please... someone help us! It's getting hard to breathe in here... please hurry!

[He sounds close to panicking as he coughs again.]

I'm Emil.

[He flinches slightly at that curse, and, out of instinct:] I'm sorry. We can't see anything down here... it's all dark, and it's getting hard to breathe too. I... I'm scared.

Don't worry. I'm a marine. So long as I can hear you, I know right where you are, and this won't slow me down. [Speaks with the even steady confidence that only comes from weathering out wars and keeping a crew of marines in check.] Your friend conscious?

Y-yes, she is. I don't think either one of us is hurt, either-- at least, I'm pretty sure I'm not hurt, and Fina sounds okay even though I can't see her in the dark.

All right, then I'm not going to call for a medical backup.

Just how many stories did this building have? Tch, all right... hang on. I'm starting to uncover ground here. [Grumbles to himself.] You'd think Whitebeard himself atta-- [Shivers and doesn't finish that sentence, just digs a little faster.]

Just two, but we were on the first floor. I think... I think the whole house is on top of us.

Don't worry, I'm getting through it and I've got backup on the way.

[There's silence for a moment.]

Just... what happened, anyway?

Earthquake.

The causes of that are currently unknown, but it seems the barrier is down as well which could cause problems with certain... enemies.

The barrier is down? Then that means... that means we can leave!

... I don't think so. Since those other people try to keep destroying the village to kill us all, it's probably a bad idea.

[Shoves off a couple of large pieces and reaches out a large gloved hand attached to an arm... made of smoke.] Where's your friend?

[Don't mind him just yelping and scrambling away from that hand at first-- it's nothing personal, just that... well. He wasn't expecting an arm made of smoke and that makes him think vaguely of ghosts or something.]

[Stares at, waiting for an answer and then just moving more stacks.]

Relax, it's just logia. ["Just" he says. Like that's even normal in his own world.]

Wh-what's that?

[He'll relax a little bit, but he's still not touching that thing.]

[Smoker is more than used to this reaction from people. He also doesn't care.]

My devil fruit. In my world there are cursed fruits. You eat one and gain a special powers, but you're cursed to never swim again and always be weak to the ocean. I ate the moku moku no mi so I can turn completely into smoke and control it around me.

[Most of that goes right over Emil's head, but he thinks he understands enough to get the gist of it.]

So... you ate a special fruit that gave you the ability to control smoke, but now you can't swim. Is that right?

Correct. I can turn into smoke as well, so the smoke you're seeing is mine.

And it won't hurt me if I touch it, will it...?

No. It should feel like a cloud if anything. I can focus it to be a lot stronger, but it doesn't hurt on its own.

[Cautiously poking at that smoke now to see for himself.]

[And just like Smoker said, it feels like a cloud: as pure as smoke can get. You wouldn't want to breathe it in, but it's completely harmless to the touch and vaguely pillow-like.]

[Once he's satisfied that it is indeed solid and not going to hurt him, he'll go over to Fina and Cupil to usher them over to that hand.]

Here, get Fina and Cupil out first. I'm okay with waiting a little bit more.

[Nods head and keeps digging, a little harder now to pull them free.]

[Emil will start digging a bit from this side-- it's not as useful as what Smoker is doing, of course, but it should help a little bit.]

[Stacks another large piece firmly off to the side.]

Here. I think I found something.

You did? What is it?

[And he's peering up through the hole now, trying to get a good look at whatever it is.]
