That's right. I am the spirit born from Derris-Kharlan's World Tree, a sapling that grew from a cutting of the original Kharlan Tree. They call me Norn.

Speaking in human terms, of course. Summon Spirits are incapable of breeding. They can merely produce something similar to offspring under special circumstances.

So... that means I really can't have kids after all.

[Well, he always DID kind of wonder about that ever since he learned he was actually a summon spirit.]

Is that also why I'm not getting any older? I mean, I still look exactly the same as I did when I first arrived here more than two years ago.

It is hard to tell. There is no doubt that you are indeed Ratatosk. Though they are subdued, all his powers are at your disposal. And yet, you feel decidedly human.

[That's a surprise to him. He's been wondering about his humanity for so long that hearing an answer like that... well, it wasn't what he was expecting, to say the least. He's always assumed his friends told him he was human because they were just humoring him.]

It may be because you have been associating yourself with humans for a long period of time. It's similar to animals taking over one another's scent.

No, it's... I really wanted to be human.

Why is that? The life of a human being is short and usually insignificant. Summon Spirits are part of the greater whole. They will survive as long as there is mana to sustain them.

But I don't want to live forever and watch all of my friends die while I stay exactly the same. If I do live forever, then nothing will be special anymore. I won't be excited to see snow, or celebrate Christmas, or do anything else that people do, because it'll just happen the next year and the year after that for the rest of eternity. That's not what I want.
