There's so much to worry about it's difficult not to be cautious.

[Shu sighs and decides that he needs to move on.]

Are we far enough yet?

[Emil stops walking and looks around to get a good feel for the area.]

Yeah, this should be good. I'm sure she'll come to us pretty fast out here. She's not like Hyt or some of the other ones, who will just ignore you if they don't like you.

Do we have to come out here every day?

[That doesn't sound too fun, but Shu wouldn't mind if it mean that he could help people with magic.]

For a little while, until you've mastered the magic. It should only take a couple of weeks at most. Actually, it'll probably be less than that if I help you with it.

You don't really have to come out here with me each time.

[Shu doesn't want to waste Emil's time by dragging him out into the woods every day for this.]

It's okay-- it would be a lot more work for you if I didn't.

[He doesn't mind it at all, really.]

You can always reconsider if you suddenly change your mind.

[Shu decides to drop it for now and wants to focus on the task at hand.]

Don't worry about it.

Anyway, you should try calling for Nala now. Just close your eyes and think about her and she should answer you.

[Shu closes his eyes and tries to reach out to Nala. He's not sure what to expect or if he's doing it right. It's difficult for him since he's still new at this.]

[If he does manage to connect, he should feel Nala's presence rather than hear it, sort of like a warmth in his mind. It's a friendly presence, strange as it might feel; it's clear from the outset that she doesn't mean him any harm.]

[Shu can sort of sense Nala, but just barely. He was frightened of Nala's presence until he sensed that she didn't want to hurt him. He looks very unsure and Emil can probably tell how insecure Shu is feeling about all of this.]

[Emil just smiles and gives him a nod of encouragement.]

Can you sense her yet?

Uh huh.

It's a little scary. She won't hurt me... I think.

No, she won't. She's friendly to just about everyone-- you don't have to worry about that.

Are there spirits who aren't friendly? [This is a bit concerning and Shu is worried again.]

Some of them are mischievous, like Kipinn, but none of them will actually hurt you.

... I don't think. I don't know much about Twila at all.

Kipinn? What happens when you try to communicate with it?

[He's very curious about the other spirits now that he's trying to contact Nala.]

That depends on whether he decides he likes you or not. If he likes you, he'll probably tease you and play some pranks on you-- that's just the way he is.

But if he doesn't like you, he'll just ignore you. So I guess in that sense it's a good thing if he's messing around with you.

How...many people can use Kipinn? Do you know? He doesn't seem like a normal spirit. Nala's friendly enough, I guess.

I don't know. I don't think anyone has ever really asked how many people can use each spirit. It might be interesting to poll the village about that sometime, just to find out.

We'll try asking sometime.

When is it okay to stop speaking to Nala? It seems unrealistic to do this for a long period of time.

[Emil blinks, a little surprised by this question.]

Oh... well, once you've made that initial contact with her, you can just talk to her whenever. It doesn't have to be all the time, just when you want to learn from her. You know, like having conversations with a friend or something.

If I need to contact her again...do I reach out to her the same way?

[Like a friend? Hm, Shu's always been sort of bad at managing his friendships. He's not sure if he's comfortable with that yet.]

That's right. Now that you've talked to her for the first time, you should be able to make contact with her anywhere within the barrier.

That's useful to know.

Does anyone know why the spirits only stay within the barrier? They aren't allowed to leave are they?
