[It's late in the evening after a busy day of work at the tea shop, cooking and chores, and animal-wrangling that Emil finally sits down to flip through his journal and catch up on the events of the day.

He's taken to using a certain Christmas card that Buffy gave him a couple of years ago as a bookmark in the journal, both to keep it from getting lost or damaged and because it's bulky enough (being one of those musical cards) that it makes it easy to find his place right away. It's never occurred to him that sticking something that plays music into a journal that can broadcast things to everyone else whose journal is open might not be the best idea-- he always keeps the card closed, and besides, he's been doing it for a long time without any issues.

Today, however, he's so tired and the couch is so comfortable that he ends up starting to doze off as he pages through the journal. Everything is fine for a while... until he rolls over a bit, dislodging both journal and card from their places on the couch beside him and sending them toppling to the floor, the card landing half-open atop the also-opened journal. Of course, this immediately triggers the card to start playing music....

Show you? You mean... cut it open and take whatever it is out?

[Emil looks slightly horrified at the thought.]

Oh I wasn't suggesting that at all. I meant more show me the card itself and the device that allows it to play music.

[Give Emil a second and he'll hold the card up to the image window for Frederic to take a look. ... not that he'll probably be able to see all that much through it, but hey, Emil tried!]

Hmm... I'm afraid I cannot see much.

You can't see much even when you're not looking through the journals... it's just a little bump between the paper.

[Frederic squints and ponders at what he's trying to see.]

A bump between the paper... I see. I do wonder what it's inner workings are.

I don't know. I don't know how something that small can play music like that, either. I mean, I know about music boxes, but even those are a lot bigger than this.

Perhaps it has something to do the mechanics of the instrument itself. It's fascinating to hear how something tiny can create its own sound however, I've worked with many instruments before but nothing like that.

Something to do the mechanics inside of a bump that small? How would that even work?

Every instrument ever created has mechanisms within them, Emil. How else do you think they are able to produce the sounds that are heard? Why without them, music would never have existed. It can be said not only for instruments, but other things men have created too. Without certain parts, things fall apart or have no use to anyone. Does that make sense?

I know that, but this is so tiny. It's only about the size of the tip of my thumb. I don't see how you could fit any kind of mechanisms into something that size, that's all. The parts would have to be so small you could barely see them.

You shouldn't judge something by its size, Emil. Even the smallest creations in life can be a gift to the world.

Maybe I should start saying that to the people who call me short...

You should. Judging others by appearance is very petty and wrong to do, as are many acts of cruelty or injustice.

Ah I'm about five-foot-nine myself. You're not that short at all, in fact I'd say you're average height for your age.

Really? But most of the other guys I know are taller... well, except for a few people, but they aren't from my world. Maybe the people in their world are just shorter.
