[Once again, it's the middle of the night, and once again Emil is having trouble sleeping. This time it's not dreams that are disturbing him, but the constant presence of the ghostly figures of his parents. Even though they've talked and come to an understanding (and how surreal that entire conversation was), he still can't help but be bothered by everything this experiment has forced him to acknowledge and confront, both about himself and about those close to him. It's no surprise that sleep isn't coming easily to him right now.

He shuts his eyes for a moment, then opens them again to find... someone he did NOT want to see again. Letting out a startled, frightened yelp, he jumps, falling right off his bed and knocking his journal off the nightstand in the process. It falls open to record his next words.]

Y-you... no... go away... go away! We killed you, you're dead... you're not real...

[Thanks a lot Emil. We were really looking forward to seeing that. And now that Richter can see him, so can Richter's 'visitor'.]

[Sorry, Richter. He didn't do it on purpose.]

H-he's taunting me...

[And he buries his face in his hands, anything so that he doesn't have to look at Diavolo right now.]

Pull yourself together. That man can't touch you. To see you cower before him would only amuse him further.

[Unfortunately, it doesn't look like Emil cares that much about that right now.]

I didn't want to kill him, but...

As far as I've heard, you didn't kill him. All you did was aid in cornering him.

But I helped. If I hadn't, he wouldn't be dead.

You don't know that. Either way, it doesn't matter. He deserved to be killed.

[Well, that sure made him feel better. Even though he knows it's true, he still feels guilty about it.]

If you'd rather stood back and watched the man slaughter half the population, it's too late. You've already acted and stopped him from doing that. Do you regret it?

[He lifts his head to look at Richter, green eyes wide in the darkness.]

I... no, I don't. I don't think...

Then pull yourself together.

[blunt Richter is very blunt, but it's really the only way he knows to 'cheer Emil up'.]

[He's silent for a moment, pulling his knees closer to his chest. Of course, Diavolo takes this opportunity to call Emil weak and a coward, which only serves to make him curl up even more.]

[oh, honestly. Now Richter's under the impression Emil's barely listening to him.]

Are you just going to sit there all night?

... I can't sleep.

[Not with Diavolo around, anyway... the guy may be a ghost, but it's still pretty creepy to have the ghost of your dead opponent taunting you and bleeding all over.]

[but you won't be able to get rid of Diavolo. He'll be there until the experiment is over.]

At least do something productive with your time.

L-like what?

[It's the middle of the night, Richter, what is there to do?]

Doesn't matter, as long as it's quiet. Unlike you, I can sleep.

[boy, this guy is really fond of his naps, isn't he?]

[Emil is perfectly willing to sit there all night to avoid falling asleep if that's what it takes; having Diavolo around is creeping him out terribly.]

Then I'll just... stay here.

[wait, what's this? Is this pity Richter is feeling?]

...

[he wants to say something remotely helpful, but nothing comes to mind. So he'll just try and retreat into his room, then.]

[But if Richter goes, that means he'll be all alone out here with his ghosts, and... that thought isn't sounding very appealing right now.]

[pause]

... Yes?

Can I stay in your room?

[Not about to ask to share a bed again, even though he wouldn't mind...]

[Richter's eyes shift to his own 'visitor' for a second, then back at Emil. He knows that the second he lets the kid into his room, Diavolo will follow. But to leave him out here like this...]

Fine.

[and he stands back to hold the door open for Emil.]

[And that's enough to get a smile out of the kid, small and shaky though it may be.]

[He climbs to his feet and enters the room, glancing around until his eyes fall upon the single chair in the corner. That will do; he'll sit in that for the time being.]

[meanwhile, Richter climbs back into bed, ignoring the look all those ghosts are giving him, including the spirit of his own. This experiment had better be over soon.]
